I agree, all I want is a more sophisticated control, not a million
config dialogs all over the place.

Probably a good idea.

I don't think so. I mean, generally speaking you don't go to configure
your E every day - you go a few times to tweak it, make it comfortable
for you and then you're just using it. Thats it. Therefore I don't see
the need to have the option to remember whether config dialogs should be
basic or advanced by default - if you want the advanced stuff - it's a
click away. And again, you do that rarely.

This is why a "clean up windows" button in the shelf is useful. And that
Files menu can easily be optional, but I think disabled by default.
