*Modular output architecture (ALSA and OSS right now, though ALSA is a little hacky)
I haven't read (could not, like everyone :P) the patch, but aren't you reinventing portaudio for that part? It already supports ALSA, OSS, OSX and Windows. Both synchronous (ie "write audio to fd") and asynchronous (callback) modes.
