to follow up on this...yes, the git situation unfortunately was a
complete disaster. :-(

We had lots of issues with the commit ML for one - some mails didn't
make it through and nobody really liked the format.

Then the gazillion work flows git allows...We only want one to suit our
needs. Agreeing on one Right work flow was hard enough, but still
developers messed up and pushed merge commits instead of rebasing.

So although it pains me to say it I guess a simpler tool is needed that
guides us more in its use than git was designed to.
