You are more than welcome to enter the discussion. Removing Tiling1 is 
not an option. Tiling1 is a released module that has been in core since 
even before our first release. We can't just remove functionality our 
users rely upon. It worked perfectly with e18 and got broken due to the 
vast amount of module (internal) API that got broken since then.

It is still maintained. The only reason why billiob hasn't updated it 
(or me for that matter), is because it was decided it's better to re-jig 
some of the core of the module while doing so, and that's how the new 
version of the tiling module was born.
