I don't think so unless you want to make one huge multi-screen sized background that stitches the different bgs together.

Otherwise, just use multiple desktops.

This is the case for e .16.5

That's been suggested in the past, when this list got much more traffic, including the heavy E-users and developers. I'd imagine that's the only way to do it...
