Perhaps the problems are indeed caused by older/ancient epplets. It appears I am running Epplets-0.5 buit from the sources posted on sourceforge.
I have not found an RPM of later versions that will install, the newer
ones I found/tried, were asking for (libImlib.so.1 is needed by epplets-0.5-3),
and I did not want to introduce another variable, by symlinking to
libImlib.so
I actually wanted to build the epplets from CVS (as of a few days ago), but on my system, it warned me about using GLX, then failed as follows:
