Until this weekend I was using e16.6pre7 on Slackware 9 default
installation with no problems. I upgraded to Slack9.1 this weekend which
uses kernel-2.4.22 and am still not seeing the problem you describe.
gkrellm shows current cpu load to be hovering between 0% and 1%.
