Excellent -- Thanks for the explanations and examples,
now I know where to look to make a script to make this
work.

What I will now be making is a script for GQview to
call from it's customizable editors menu. The script
will essentially get a filename from GQview and then
set the E background to that file. No patching of E
required. :)
