Follow-up: I compiled a new cvs download tonight, and the same effects are seen in tonights 0.16.7 cvs build as on my previous build.
With 0.16.6 the menus in the R-9X theme[1] have the usual arrow image to represent a sub-menu. Also, the dragbar and the iconbox title do not display a color gradient effect. (light blue on left getting darker to the right.) With 0.16.7cvs, the menus in the R-9X theme "smear" the arrows which indicate a sub-menu. The dragbar and the iconbox titlebar show a gradient effect. No other windows display this unexpected gradient. Any suggestions on how to restore the theme's default appearance in the cvs build?
