I havn't checked out the e17 version in mdk contrib for a long time, last
time I did it was a quite old version from september 2003.

I got it working finally on my cooker-system, but always started it from
comandline, never tried using gdm for it.

Try something like the following:

startx /usr/X11/bin/e17 -- :1
^--- path and name of e17-binary can differ
                       "-- :1" starts a additional x on Strg-Alt-F8

Be sure that fam and portmap are running.

I also have to say that the old version I tested wasn't very stable and I
missed some essential functions.

So, if you're waiting for ready rpm as replacement for e16.6 you should
wait a bit more.

Regards,

Friedrich
