I happened to have forgotten to mention that you need appropriate
(pre-built) eap files to use with e17genmenu...

You can download the applications.tar.gz here:
http://sps.nus.edu.sg/~didierbe/packages/applications.tar.gz

This one has been created by Matthias Haase with over 400 eap which
comprises a full Fedora Core KDE and GNOME installation.

Unpack and copy all the eap files in the "all" directory to your 

~/.e/e/applications/all

before using e17genmenu.
