Apparently thinktux pulls some serious load and bandwidth - and that is not all
of the anonymous CVS access we have. Apparently Thinktux's machine is farily
overloaded CPU-wise and is pulling a good 25GB of CVS data traffic per day. I
imagine this will only increase over time and if all anonymous CVS access is
moved here - then it will get even worse.

I don't think 25GB of traffic is very much, actually.. the real interesting numbers are the bandwidth peaks and number of concurrent connections.. moving 25GB every day would only require ~2.5Mb bandwidth, given that usage is spread out over the day..

1. Consider if this is a sane option at all (IMHO with a little work it is and
opens up lots of future possibilities).

I'd say it's very sane

2. If so - what box do we really need? I am thinking something like:

I like HP servers, have good experiences with DL380;
http://h18004.www1.hp.com/products/servers/proliantdl380/index.html

as for software platform, I'm an avid Trustix supporter.. have been using it since 1.0 was in beta :)

3. Are people willing to donate enough $ to make it happen?

I'll chip in..

and, if need be, I would love to step in and help with system maintenance and administration :)
