Thanks very much. That certainly gets me a tray, and nm-applet runs and 
lodges in it. But it still reports no networks available and none 
connected -- which is a lie, because Network Manager connected me to my 
home wifi (which is how I'm sending this).

Running Enlightenment somehow made NM forget something, because now it 
won't work in Ububtu's default Gnome where it was working before; but I 
don't know what is broken because I can't find where it stores stuff, 
and the keyring data is of course inaccessible anyway. Grr.

I don't seem to have that. I'm running whatever E was installed by 
Synaptic from Ubuntu Edgy and as this is a production machine, that's as 
far as I'm prepared to go as an experiment. I have another system I can 
try 0.16.8 on.
