I think I found something about this error. When I built e16 I was using gcc 
3.3.6,
and `-fvisibility=hidden' option doesn't seem to be supported by this version 
of gcc
or the option may be broken or something...  In any case, it'd probably be 
necessary
to upgrade my gcc.
