Hah! You're absolutely right: I was missing out the "Assign" step. I have this vague feeling it might have worked differently before, but I could be wrong. In any case, the way it works now is a bit confusing, with separate "Assign" and "Apply" buttons that have to be clicked in the right order. It would better to do as you suggest, and disable the Apply button when there's nothing to apply, as in every other configuration dialog. Also, why not get rid of the Assign button completely, so that you simply select an element on the left and a theme on the right, and click Apply? This too would be more in keeping with the other configuration dialogs. But these are minor gripes that I wouldn't expect to be polished up until the final release :) Thanks so much for taking the time to put me straight. I wonder why it didn't work when I used enlightenment_remote? Perhaps I forgot to restart e afterwards, or something. That just leaves the battery icon issue...
