Unfortunately this depends on how you select your session and which 
distro you are using.

If you are using a display manager like e.g. gdm it is most likely 
looking for xsessions/*.desktop files. I'd normally expect it to pick up 
at least the "E16" session if e16 was installed with prefix = /usr (i.e. 
the xsession dir is /usr/share/xsessions).
It is likely that the display manager must be restarted before it picks 
up new or changed xsession files.
