Sorry for beating a dead horse, but to clarify the issue further
(hopefully). I am on Ubuntu 10.10 32bit with all  E17 related auto
mounting turned off in the fileman configurations, and without the places
module activated. I assume this means that all mounting and unmounting tasks
are handled by udev and the distributions standard hot-plugging rules.
