You could use the cursor theme from here as a workaround
http://e17-stuff.org/content/show.php/default+e17+theme+X11+cursor?content=112877
to fall back to, so you won't notice that much. I just have that
theme in ~/.icons and point to that in .Xdefaults (Xcursor.theme:
e17cur) and in ~/.gtkrc-2.0 (gtk-cursor-theme-name="e17cur").
