I won't if someone else has already created such a theme, or if there's some non-theme-based way to affect these, but since neither of those appears to be true... >> I want to have a plain black background, instead of an image-file >> wallpaper. Which is the "undesirable kludge" I was talking about. Yes, I can do it, but IMO I shouldn't have to. >> I want to have no desktop icons, period. >> >> A bit of experimentation has revealed that the created-by-default icons can >> be gotten rid of by deleting ~/Desktop/, but it is not clear whether icons >> will ever be displayed from any other location, nor whether anything will >> ever automatically re-generate the ~/Desktop/ directory. > > You're doing it wrong. Not if you think of the desktop as being part of the file manager, probably not. It didn't even occur to me to consider that as a possibility, however, so it's no surprise that I didn't find it. (I would have found it if I'd gone in to look at the file-manager options, but since I don't use a file manager and don't plan to, I didn't bother.) Thank you; this does seem suitable. >> I want to be able to use one mouse button to switch between desktops in the >> pager, and a different mouse button to move windows around in the pager. > > The default setting is: Mouse 1 (Left Mouse Button) for desktop switching, > Mouse 2 (Middle Mouse Button) for window dragging. For now, they can't be > repositioned on one desktop with the pager, but moved between desktops with > different mouse buttons. Fortunately, I don't want to use different buttons for "move around within a desktop" and "move between desktops". I just want to use different buttons for "move windows via the pager" and "switch desktops via the pager". Despire my searching through the options, I didn't discover the fact that middle-click can be used for window dragging. However, that doesn't completely satisfy this, as I more specifically want to use right-click to switch between desktops and left-click to drag windows. Again, E16 made that simple; does E17 allow it? >> I want to be able to decide which way a window should maximize >> (horizontally, vertically, or both) at maximize time. >> >> E17 provides a way to control this globally as a system-wide config option, >> but unlike with E16, no apparent way to make the decision manually at >> maximize time. > > Context menu of the window (right click on the border): Window -> Maximize. > Not hard to find. It's actually under Window -> Placement -> Maximize -> [individual actions]. So apparently this is indeed doable, albeit less conveniently than was the case in E16 (where it was just a matter of which mouse button to click with). >> I want to be able to jump to any window (including restoring "iconified" >> ones) from any desktop readily at any time, without having to dedicate >> screen space to this functionality at any other time. >> >> In E16, I can do this by closing the "iconbox" window, and using the >> alt-middle-click "list all windows" menu. The reason I didn't is simply that I was expecting it to be in the same "middle-click menu" as before, and with that gone, it didn't occur to me to look in the single remaining menu. Given how much else seems to have been merged into there, it should have. >> I want the pager to not display miniature "snapshots" of the contents of >> windows, just representations of the location and size of those windows. >> >> In E16, this could be done by setting the pager to "Simple" mode. Hmm. You seem to be right; it just didn't look that way when I was examining the pager during my previous testing. (And the representations themselves appear fancier, and use the theme colors, to such a point that I thought the representation of the Settings panel - which also uses those colors - was an actual image of it. I apologize for the mistake.) >> I want to be able to have windows overlap between "desktops", and visible >> on both sides. >> >> Specifically, I've found this useful for A: windows too large in some >> dimension to fit on the screen (e.g. for very large image files), and B: >> windows which get automatically placed so that the window-manager >> decorations are offscreen (and so the window "handles", other than for >> resize, aren't readily accessible from the desktop where the window was >> placed). Not always suitable, and in some cases potentially not possible (e.g. when the window is fullscreen, with the "move" handles placed offscreen, and the pager isn't visible). Regardless, I know this isn't possible under current E17; I'm saying I *want* to be able to do it, and thus requesting that it be implemented. I recognize that it probably won't, but I still want it to be. >> I would like to be able to place the pager in any arbitrary location, >> rather than just in whatever locations a "shelf" can be pinned to. >> >> In E16, the pager was just another window, and could be moved around (and >> redecorated) like any other window; I personally consider this to be an >> advantage. As far as I see, shelves can only be placed in predetermined positions, not in "any position". > or you can place it at any place on the desktop using the "Gadgets" module. That I wasn't aware of.
