I partially solved the issue by having the ibar in a background overlay and
not in a shelf, that way the icons aren't truncated on the sides

that said, it poses another problem which is whenever I use the System
Update gadget, the ibar location moves from its original place

what is the ibar replacement you're reffering to Stephen, something we can
test ?
