Yes, 'live view' is required for the preview mode in Entangle. > I'll have a look at this model though I hoped there could be even > older/cheaper models with all the basic features. This page has a list of the first DSLRs to support live view. It looks like the Canon EOS 1000D is the first entry level Canon to support it. IIRC the 1000D is fairly similar to 450D in second hand prices. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Live_preview#Digital_SLRs > In the list of gphoto, I see some cameras are not even listed like > having "image capture" (nor live view). Remember that gphoto2 really started simply as a way to download images off digital cameras. The addition of support for capture and config was a later addition. You are right though that without image capture, it is pretty much useless for entangle. In the entangle UI, if you go to Help -> Supported Cameras, it has a list of all the models that gphoto2 claims to support image capture for. The majority there are old point and shoot models rather than DSLRs. I have a couple of 8+ year old Canon point & shoots which can do capture, but they are pretty low res, and slow. Also don't be fooled by libgphoto claiming that old point & shoot models do preview mode. They have just implemented "preview" mode by doing a regular image capture at a low resolution - this is so insanely slow (2-5 seconds per preview) as to make it useless for entangle.
