I used to work on a system called Alloptics. We would have 32 ONUs to a PON
and something like 16 PONs in a single chassis. It was invaluable to read the
optical power on each of the ONUs and it accelerated troubleshooting.

In my case, the ONUs were installed in single family homes. Being able to get
inside someone's home with a light meter required some scheduling.

It was also handy to see if we had a bad splice. For example, three ONUs
downstream from a splice have poor optical power while the other ones ahead of
the splice are within specs.

At my current company, we don't have much need for this feature since we hardly
have any fiber.

If the SFP is offering the data why not take it and provide it to the user?

If the list really wants this feature I suggest providing Enterasys with a list
of users and contact information. If they see a majority of users requesting
this feature they may start working on it.

Subject: Re: [enterasys] How to check Optical Power of SFP'S (SFP+)

Lou,

I noticed this feature from competitors when evaluating switches last
year. I was intrigued by the convenience of having this data
dynamically. Especially since our fiber plant records aren't very well
maintained or conveniently accessible.

For me the potential use would be to verify we're operating inside our
signal budget and possibly to detect degraded transceivers, optics or
patch cables. My experience has been that the degraded physical layer
will manifest in rmon errors which on enterasys can be monitored and
generate logs and traps/informs with rmon alarms.

Are there other uses for this feature?
