Unfortunately the crash is deliberate.

The security bug (https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1140616) is
now open, and you can see the patch that was added:

+    MOZ_CRASH("NPN_releaseobject called from the wrong thread");

Apparently by this point, the Java Plugin is in an unstable state and is
going to crash at some point anyway, but this makes the crash less random
(and prevents memory overwrites which is the security issue).

Based on the lack of feedback from Mozilla to my comment (
https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1221448#c60), I doubt there is
anything they are going to do to make things better.

So it looks like everyone is stuck on this outdated version of the ESR
until the Firefox 45 ESR.

Even more unfortunate is that when Firefox 45 ESR comes out, it has other
things that break enterprise (removal of distribution/bundles, extension
signing) so it's not going to be a great release for enterprise either.

I was going to encourage folks to stay on Firefox 38 ESR as long as
possible if they don't need security fixes (no access to external web), but
this Java crash prevents that.
