In the light of the recent helpful comments made by Mozilla personnel
("Add-on Signing In ESR" thread) on the issue of "add-on signing
enforcement control preference" retention in the ESR release channel (for
which many thanks), I'm wondering : can we have a statement from Mozilla as
to whether or not the removal of the code providing fine grained cookie
control will be applied to the ESR channel ?

https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=606655
http://tech.slashdot.org/story/16/02/04/2221204/firefox-44-deletes-fine-grained-cookie-management

Speaking personally, I activate the cookie controls (switch on the "Ask me
every time" option) on almost every single instance of FF that I ever
install, along with NoScript, whether at home, at work, or for friends -
except for the very few friends or managers who have no understanding of
the web and just want to surf unharassed by arcane browser prompts.

For the sake of clarity, I'm talking about *this* feature, which is still
currently available in ESR (albeit deeply buried), but which is now
apparently scheduled to be removed as from RR version 44 :
"Tools | Options | Privacy | History | Use custom settings for history |
Accept cookies | Keep until | Ask me every time".

FWIW, the above removal bug has numerous comments from Mozilla staff to the
effect that the code is unmaintained and causes frequent crashes. My
personal experience is that while the feature is a little flaky (e.g.
checking "Apply my decision to all cookies from this site" often doesn't
work), it has never obviously been responsible for crashing the browser.

If I had my wish, I'd rather somebody were tasked to fix the flakiness,
rather than working on removing this very useful feature.

If, however, the feature is indeed doomed, then could we please have some
clarification of the Mozilla staff bug comments to the effect that "such
functionality is better provided by one of the existing Firefox add-ons" ?
There are many such add-ons ... I've tried a few, but not found any so far
that hit the spot enough for me to want to always install. As we all know,
keeping the set of installed add-ons as small as possible is the path to
browsing happiness :)

Is Mozilla able to recommend any particular add-on ?
Sorry for the noise if the answer to all this is already documented
somewhere - please just send me a link.

Thanks,
Nick Boyce
