It appears that the Mozilla provided Linux ESR 45 (and mainline 45)
builds are built against GTK+2 and not GTK+3 - which good for me ...

The last 45 beta I looked at (beta 3) was built against GTK+3

Was there a reason Mozilla switched back to GTK+2 ?

We explained here:
https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1245476#c0
tldr: two important issues and we didn't want to have the first release
with GTK3 to be an ESR release.

Is it safe to say that all future ESR 45 releases will stay with GTK+2 ?
Yes, of course. With ESR, we commit to stability and security. We do
make any important changes.

Thanks for the info
