This solution seems very promising, but unfortunately I wasn't able to

I'll have a more detailled look at it tomorrow, but at least my first
impression from looking at

is that GMP plugins other than "gmp-clearkey" will only be found in the
user profile. strace also seems to confirm this, as I can see no file
access to the .so files (or even the "system-installed" directory) there...
Maybe an interesting question in this regard: Are you using a
custom-built, Mozilla's or the distribution's Firefox packages? And in
the last case: Which Linux distribution are you using?
