Something has happened to the way these operating systems configure feel
associations once FF Quantum is installed.
There is some kind of regular checking mechanism and the default program for
jpg, png, pdf and others - Preview.app is flipped to other programs installed
on the machine. For instance, on my machine, there is a regular instance of my
jpg files defaulting to Firefox at a certain point in time.
This does not happen just between boots, but also seemingly randomly while
Firefox is open. I can have the session up, no hibernation and firefox has not
had much activity other than open tabs.

At certain points in time, the operating system is instructed to change the
default settings of what applications by various file extensions.

This has been going on for a while now and has been discussed by some fairly
seasoned technical people in the MacRumors forum. There are people contributing
claiming this has been resolved, but it is not the case. The problem persists.

Here is a description of exactly the kinds of behaviors I, and other people
experience:

The conclusion to it all is that Quantum is doing this.

Quantum seems to be the one commonality between all of the users on that board

Can someone check the API version being used and the way it is used for
unintended changes that Apple has applied?
This is happening in Lion, mountain Lion, Leopard, Snow Leopard, Yosemite,
Mavericks, El Capitan, Sierra and High Sierra.
Another clue here is when you decide dot change the file association back from
the Option I key combination, you are given a suggested program to switch to,
but it is NEVER offering up Preview.app. You have to select the option Other...
to have the application folder come up and then you can select Preview.
>From here and from the Command-I screen you can select to change it to default
>for all files of this type. But this does not hold it. The file associations
>again will change on the end user.

This is simply NOT the way Firefox has EVER behaved in the past and I have to
believe that the way the programming in Quantum is using the API calls is not
completely correct. I am guessing this is kernel level I guess since it is
forcing the OS to change file associations.
Here is a possibly insightful comment in MacRumors about this stuff
