I always put the extensions in the browser/extensions subdirectory where
firefox.exe is (some of them xpi, some of them unzipped), and, in my limited
testing, this still works with 68 esr (though when I create a user's profile
I set extensions.autoDisableScopes to 11).
I confirm too, 'sideloading' still works on 68 (FF and TB).
I've managed to get 'sideloading' to work with ESR 68 - just had to
rename the extension xpi file to match its 'id' (from its manifest.json
file)
All I need now is for the same to work with all future major ESR
releases ...
