This idea by Robert seems like a terrific one; a script that will do
automatic backups of modified folders. With a little experimentation, I
discovered that the following code will save a folder as a mailbox file!!

tell application "Microsoft Entourage"
save folder "Robert" of folder "Contacts" in "MyDisk:Desktop
Folder:Robert"
end tell

Obviously, the folder location for the file could be variable, and the name
of the file could be taken from the folder name. To get the subfolders, that
should be recursive.

Now, all that remains is the shell that scans folders and sub-folders to
find if they contain messages sent or received more recently than the last
backup of the folder (available from the modification date of the last
backup file). Sound interesting, Paul? (It does to me, but I'm too busy just
now, still trying to catch up with converting all my OE scripts and
uploading them with Readme files.)

Or, would we want another selection criteria? Manual? Backup everything,
alternating between Set A and Set B, so you always have two generations of
backup?

I'm liking this idea, frankly. Of course, it does not back up rules,
contacts, or accounts. It's a good method for messages, which are certainly
the most volatile part of the Entourage database. But I think we still need
to do regular copies of the whole shebang.
