I've been using Word and Entourage for about a month now and I hadn't
noticed this behavior but the trailing space is indeed selected in both when
a word is double-clicked. I supposed I never noticed it because the behavior
(though not the hiliting) was completely within my expectations. When I
double-click a word I have two things in mind. One, I intend to replace or
delete the word. If I am deleting it altogether, the most common thing for
me, I do not want to be forced to delete that trailing space. If I am typing
over the word I don't mind typing the extra space, I'm already typing. Two,
in Word, I might select the word to change it's format or style. If I do
this, the trailing space is not affected in a noticeable way. To test, go to
Word and double-click a word in the middle of a sentence, then apply the
underline. The trailing space is not underlined. Again, this is within my
expectation.

Going back to my early days of Mac use, this is how WriteNow, Word 3,
WordPerfect, and MacWrite Pro behaved. Again, they didn't hilite the
trailing space, but they did delete the extra space when the word was
deleted or overtyped. In fact, of all the word processors I have used on the
Mac, only ClarisWorks behaves differently. And, I might add, I can remember
this being a big issue that users wanted changed.

To recap. Until now I have never seen a trailing space selected as a result
of word being double-clicked. However, the subsequent behavior is within my
expectations after 10+ years of using a Macintosh.

However, in further testing, I discovered that Entourage does something I
don't expect. I don't normally sent HTML mail, but I started a new message
and selected this option. After typing a sentence and double-clicking a word
in the middle, I then applied the underline. The trailing space was
underlined. That's gotta be an oops.

As I outlined above, I agree that the selection of the space isn't normal
Mac behavior. However, the rest is consistent with what I've experienced for
10 years.
