I had a major crash of Entourage today (error type 10) when I switched from
Internet Explorer to Entourage. Both apps had been open and running all
morning. After a forced restart (no other option). Entourage could not open
my database. Originally, I was presented with a window stating "An error
occurred while launching. Out of memory". After bumping the memory
allocation up to 128 megs and attempting the various fixes below I now get a
window stating "An error occurred while launching. End of file was reached."

I tried both types of rebuilds but got a message stating the "Compacting
failed. The file is already opened with write permissions." I have copied
the entire Microsoft Users Data file to a different system and received the
identical results.

I renamed my MUD (Microsoft Users Data) folder and restarted Entourage. A
new MUD folder was created upon launch. I quit the app and copied all the
files from my original MUD, except for the Database file and the Messages
file. All my Rules, Signatures, Accounts, etc. made the transfer unscathed.

I then tried replacing the new Messages file with my old one, but kept the
new Database file in place. Entourage launched fine, but ignored my original
Message file. A rebuild at this point did not re-link my original Message
file to the new Database.

I then tried the reverse. I copied over my original Database but used the
new Messages. Entourage would not launch. Again, with the "end of file was
reached" message. Obviously, the database is corrupt. Apparently beyond
repair. The strange thing is, I can still access my address book by using
the Office Control Strip! Are they not in the Database file?!

Down to my last resort. I had set up a script in Retrospect to copy my MUD
folder to a separate drive every night. I'm safe right? Only lost the
message received since backup, right?

WRONG!

Because I leave Entourage running at all times, Retrospect failed to copy
the "open" files. This of course includes the Database and Message files!

OH, THE AGONY!

In the backup MUD folder all the files are represented with a document icon,
but the "open" files are all zero k in size no data!

I still have copies of the damaged files. I have opened copies of old and
new database files in BBEdit and I can see my data interspersed amongst the
gibberish, but I have no idea what info I could extract from a good database
file to paste into my corrupt database file to get it to open again.

Any assistance is greatly appreciated!
