Hi List,
I have an issue with Entourage's data files that I've never come across
before, and do not know if there is a solution or not.
I keep my email on my main desktop machine, however, I also have Entourage
installed on a PowerBook. Rather than duplicate the data files on the
PowerBook, I made an alias of the Microsoft User Data folder and placed that
in the PowerBooks documents folder. The desktop's hard drive is then mounted
on the PowerBook desktop via AirPort. This setup has worked surprisingly
well.
However, I finally had the PowerBook crash and was forced to reboot the
machine with Entourage open. Now, I cannot read the database on the desktop
machine. Entourage reports "a problem when starting up" or something
similar, or "file is open with write permission" if I attempt a rebuild.
Now, this isn't the disaster it could have been because I have a good
backup, and I was able to restore the data files. But, I'd still like to
recover the old data file, if at all possible, to grab the few messages I
did lose. If I'm able to access the old data file again, I had planned to
drag the messages onto the Desktop, then into Entourage as I'm using it now.
Any comments or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I'm extremely
happy with Entourage's mail handling. And the database is indeed more robust
than previous versions. I especially appreciate the feature that saves work
in progress if the crash happens while working on a message. Even though the
Mac OS seems to be very stable nowadays, by virtue of the fact that
Entourage is almost always open, if a crash does happen, its going to affect
it.
Thank you,
Bob
