They become part of the mail database, linked to the message that sent it.
You can, however, save them to a different folder and leave them in the
database or save them to a different folder and remove them from the
database.

On a side note, I don't save too many attachments within the database, I
normally save them to disk, in a folder I've set up. But, some I leave for
future reference and then forget about. I used to use a script that Paul
Berkowitz wrote to find attachments in OE, however Entourage and it's custom
views makes this easy. Select Custom Views, then New, then fill out as
follows:

Under Item Types select the Checkbox beside "Messages"

Under Location select "All Folders"

Under Criteria select matches "If any criteria are met"

and "Attachment", "Exists".

Took a minute and a half to search 5,550 messages for attachments the first
time I ran it but subsequent searches are very fast, perhaps 10 seconds.
Anyway, if you leave attachments in your database (or are looking for
stragglers to eradicate) this will find them without a script.
