If you imported from Palm Desktop then I believe the behavior you are seeing
is the same bug I mentioned earlier. The description I gave was that it
occurs if you previously created new categories in Palm Desktop, applied
them to items in Palm Desktop, imported the items and categories from Palm
Desktop into Entourage, create and applied categories in Entourage, and then
synch to Palm. My description of the steps describes the way in which I
could reproduce the problem and doesn't exclude other similar methods of
producing the bug. I think the key thing that causes the problem is
importing items with categories from Palm Desktop.

You mentioned that you created the categories on the Palm and synchronized
with Palm Desktop. I think the root of the problem occurred when you
imported the items from Palm Desktop. Entourage does not treat the
categories that were imported from Palm Desktop properly. It appears that
Entourage does not keep track of which Palm category is the same as an
existing category and keeps adding it every time you synch, not associating
it with the main Entourage parent category of the same name.

When you said "I figured it was easiest to just over right Erage with the
Palm (since I performed a synch prior to installing Erage," I assume you did
not start over with a new identity and sync from the Palm and that you
simply tried to overwrite Entourage's data, which does not fix the problem
with the categories list.

To fix the problem you have to rename your identity. Create a new one with
the correct name. Synch with Palm Overwrites Entourage. Then re-create your
pref settings and accounts in Entourage and drag any locally stored mail to
the new identity.

Kristin:

Bear with me, this is long....

In the past, I used Palm Desktop to synch with my Palm. With the release of
OE 5, I started synching my OE contacts with the Palm, and having the Palm
always over right Palm Desktop. During this period, I once created a few
categories (only in Notes and Contacts), directly on the Palm device.

Then came Erage. I first installed Erage and had it import contacts from OE
and everything else from Palm Desktop. Unfortunately, the import didn't go
so well, and my calendar was all screwed up. I won't get into that screw
up, but I figured it was easiest to just over right Erage with the Palm
(since I performed a synch prior to installing Erage).

Since then, I've created no new categories in Erage or on the Palm, yet the
Personal category continues to be added again and again and again.
