I brought several of these points up a few weeks ago; hopefully they're
working on improving it. I was amazed that "Categories" are totally unused
in the Merge Manager. It seems like this would obviously be useful ("send a
mail merge to everyone in the Family Category"). Also, the few fields that
they allow to be merged are rather arbitrary ("Job Title" but not
"Custom_1", which would allow truly useful database usage?).
Anyhow, glad to hear there are others out there with high hopes. Maybe
they'll be included in version 1.1.
