Not contradicting Dans suggestion, my experience is the amount of messages
per folder is significant to speed. My rough numbers are:
below 1,000 msgs/folder: fast
below 5,000 msgs/folder: bearable on a fast machine
above 5,000 msgs/folder: slow as molasses
Of cause the total number of messages/database weights as well,
after reducing message count from ~100,000 down to ~35,000, going
to a folder (and back!) containing 10,000 messages is noticeably
accelerated.
