Here's some other thoughts....

Are you using IE 4.x on this machine?  How about Office 98?  Did you use the
Remove Office 98 utility before running the Office:2001 installer?  The two
aren't compatible.

Any hack-ware system extensions... Extensions that do odd things to the OS?
Aren't mainstream that could be causing problems?

Otherwise, I don't really know what else to suggest.
