A foolish consistency is the hobgoblin of small minds.

I've a collection of real-world BN stories. But then I've some close
friends who've worked there and been treated terribly.
Also, I've watched the Barnes and Noblization of America as they've aided in
the homogenizing/suburbanizing/strip-malling of the world. And any company
that has aided Starbucks...well, don't get me started.

I, on the other hand, have several friends at Amazon and much respect for
what they were trying to do. Alas, privacy concerns have caused them to
have to mitigate some features that I, for one, had hoped to take great
advantage of.
In the meantime, our society ignores the real privacy issues, makes noise
about Internet privacy, and keeps its collective head securely buried in the
virtual sand. The commercial concerns that are already making use of
information that *should* be private can afford to keep pet Congressman and
Senators; Internet concerns, for the most part, lack the, um,
sophistication. Internet privacy, IMO, is just a smokescreen.

Now that I can agree with.
And frankly I order from B&N as often as possible so as to help them lose
money.

PS: Yes, today I'm a bit more reactionary than normal. Ironic concerning
that I work for a multinational corporation that employs 150k+ people. And
I, with great enthusiasm, am actively working on technology that, in the
end, will likely only serve to further homogenize the world.
