B&N knocked off a nice little bookstore nearby in my hometown, so I'm not a
cheerleader, either. All of a sudden, it was gone. Overnight. Too bad,
because it had a cheery atmosphere and pleasant help who brewed the coffee
themselves in a regular pot. There was usually a bake sale for charity going
on if you wanted more than coffee.
My experience with Amazon has been entirely positive in terms of sales
follow-up, speed of delivery and access to hard-to-get titles. I wasn't
aware of the hand-wringing about privacy.
I'm afraid I can't buy into the fervor for government regulation. No matter
how seemingly noble the cause, once you let the bureaucrats and shysters
into the tent, you'll never get them out. You'll live to tell your progeny
how wonderful it used to be when the Internet was free and freewheeling and
not one of Uncle Sam's bastard children.
