Thanks for the hint. I ran disk first aid (a few custom icons were missing)
and followed that up with Tech Tools Pro which found a bunch of bundle bit
and data problems. I also finally threw away the Outlook Express 5.0.2
stuff (but that shouldn't have had any effect). All seems to be working now
at least for two tries.
I'll be optimistic and call it solved until I see a problem again.
By the way, I did find a Windows Media Player folder on my desktop (it was
not in the plug in folder) so I deleted it just in case.
