When this happened to me recently, it was something to do with my USB
devices. I have a USB external hard drive, and when it is plugged in,
sometimes the system hangs at that point (after extensions, empty desktop)
for several minutes before something frees up and everything comes to life.
This never happens if the USB drive is not connected. Do you have any
external USB devices? If so, does this happen if you disconnect them?
