I think I sort of understand this :-), although I've never played with using
dummy accounts. So if I did it, what would happen is that I'd send the
message to the dummy account and then have an outgoing rule for that account
that would set the .sig? But if you can't fiddle with the .sig except in the
draft window, how would that work?

The Mailing List Manager must be able to affect messages sent to lists while
they're still in the draft window, since it will allow you to put a prefix
in the "to" box, and send outgoing messages to a specific mailbox, and I
assume this is happening in the "drafts" window. I wonder if there's any way
to use the MLM to fiddle with messages. In addition to the .sig, I'd really
prefer to have messages to lists start out with "on <date>, <person> said:"
and then have the quote and then my .sig for that list. OTOH, for personal
replies, I like to put the reply followed by my normal .sig and then the
message to which I'm replying. The "preferences: mail" allows either of
these formats, so if somehow I could use the MLM to affect outgoing messages
in ways other than are now in the MLM, I could choose the reply format and
the .sig. Is that something that a dummy SMTP account would let me do?
