If ever a project should have been open-sourced or re-engineered by the open
source community, it was OpenDoc.
One of the fundamental flaws was that it was hard to make money. Hey, we're
open-sourcers, we don't care if we can't make money.
Once you change your human/computer paradigm, it was quite nice to have
something that "just works".
Of course, you don't actually need OpenDoc to make a real editor. And it's
a pain to support if you're selling it. And there's no way you'd ever want
to publish your API, because then you'd have to support everyone's broken
plug-ins.
But this entire write just text and throw attachments to some random
location just doesn't cut it. MIME provides such fantastic functionality
that no one bothers to support...and instead we're stuck with really lame
HTML emails...
