It's all about the loss leader, dude. ;-)
You see, when OE 5 was introduced, Internet Portals were the thing, and the
more Hotmail users Microsoft had the higher its market capitalization
climbed. So then it made perfect sense to increase the exposure of Hotmail.
With market caps at insane valuations (intermittently in the thousands of
dollars per user range), I'd certainly give away all I could.
Of course, with sufficient effort, you can rationalize any conspiracy
theory. Just ask the Flat Earth Society.
