If you get my script Progress Window Connect 1.1 (Entourage version), the
Progress Window will only open during mail checks when Entourage is in the
front (and only for the accounts you want), if you _don't_ open it manually
but just let the script do it. When E is in the background the PW won't
open. (For those who want it to, that can be programmed too, by opening it
once manually: then it opens for mail checks only when E is in the front but
stays open when E is in the background. Your choice.)
