Not to rub salt in a wound, but it does pay to back up. I very much
recommend the AppleScript by Jeff Porten, "Backup Entourage Data," available
from AppleScript Central:

It automatically keeps a father and grandfather copy of all your data when
run. I run it once a week at least; only takes a minute or two.
Only oddity: While the script requires you to exit Entourage to do its
thing, it requires that Entourage be open to do its setup; otherwise it
errors. At least for me. Since Entourage schedules can run scripts, I set up
a Schedule to run this script twice a week. Set it and forget it.
