I mentioned this a while back and have since gathered a little more data but
it is still intermittent and I cannot determine a cause and effect yet. The
details:
I am one of a handful of Macintosh users in a company dedicated to Intel
PCs, Outlook 97/98, and Exchange Server 5.5. I receive my mail via the POP
service of the Exchange Server and send mail to the SMTP service. I am
using a PowerBook G3, bronze Keyboard with 128 MB memory and OS 9.0.4. I
have installed the Office 2001 SR1.
Sometimes when I request entourage to print a message, the Entourage print
dialog box window comes up, but the interior is blank. The mouse still
moves but nothing else works. The apple-option-escape salute brings up the
"force Quit" box, but when I select "force quit" the machine freezes and my
only option is the paperclip reset.
It doesn't happen all the time. Most often the message has attachments and
I have found the problem more prevalent with messages from a couple people.
But there are counter examples to both of these.
If I forward or redirect the message to myself (i.e. The same account), I
can print from the copy just fine. If I forward it to another account, I
can print just fine. So I cannot forward a copy of the message for
analysis. If I go to one of our walk-up PCs and log into my Outlook
account, I can print the message just fine. Frustrating!
I looked at the source and cannot see anything strange. I did find that if
I drag the message to the desktop (creating an Mbox, I think) and then drag
it back to Entourage, the print failure still occurs. In fact I can take
that "Mbox" copy to another Macintosh machine and drag it back into
Entourage and the print failure does occur. So I do have a copy of an
offending message that I might be able to send to somebody that will retain
the problem.
One difference I found on my B&W G3/350 with 128 MB memory and OS 9.1 was
that the whole system does not freeze. That is, the Force Quit of Entourage
does work and takes me back to the finder.
Sorry for the long drawn out explanation, but this is getting very
frustrating. I am interested in any workaround other than redirecting every
message that I want to print to myself and printing from the copy. (and I am
not prepared to give up my Mac yet, even though the company IT department
provides no support at all for us hold-outs.) Since I do have a workaround,
I would at least like to know that the MBU at Microsoft has identified the
problem and that a fix can be expected in some unknown future update. <g>
Thanks,
Jim
