Yes, turning off reminders cured the problem. I had forgotten about the
existence of the Control Strip module, because I had disabled it when I
first installed Entourage. It seem strange to me that you can't also turn
off reminders from the Preferences dialog or some other UI widget.

But it's still a problem, because I shouldn't have to choose between
reminders and being able to take my files with me on a trip. I suppose
turning off reminders momentarily using the Control Strip module is a minor
nuisance, though -- can it be done by AppleScript?
