I struggled with this for days, and it's still a mystery to me, though I can
share some tidbits of information. I finally got a bootable Zip disk after
much hard work. And yet, when I made what I thought would be a mirror image
copy of the disk to another cartridge, the copy won't boot! I can't figure
that out, so I guard that one working disk with my life.
I found that, first of all, I could not get a Zip disk to boot at all if
Iomega's drivers were installed. Only using Apple's USB driver by itself
works for me. Then, it shows up in the Startup Disk control panel. With the
Iomega driver in control, it does not show up as a potential startup disk!
I have since run across an article that tells a way to start up with or
without the Iomega driver, but I have not tested it. Here is what the
article said:
The steps to boot from an Iomega USB \ drive:
1. Have a valid Mac OS on Iomega Zip cart.
2a. If the Apple Mass Storage Driver (MSD) controls the USB drive, you
can choose the Zip USB cart in the Startup Disk control panel. Shut
down CPU, wait for cart to eject. Reinsert cart, then restart CPU.
2b. If the USB Iomega Driver controls the USB drive, turn off eject at
restart using Iomega Drive control panel. Restart Mac; hold down option
key during boot. A screen will come up that allows you to choose the
USB device as boot device.
As I recall, when I tried the option key trick, I saw the screen that let me
select the USB Zip drive, and did. However, the iBook apparently looked at
it, rejected it, and reverted to starting from the internal hard drive.
Most of the time now, rather than starting from my Zip drive, I start from
my Installation CD, which supports Zip drives.
Oh! Another thing I've found. I have an external USB hard drive as well from
MacMall, which uses Radialogic USB drivers. If I have those drivers
installed, my Zip drives are not recognized at all!! To use the Zip drives,
I have to disable the Radialogic drivers. The converse is true as well; if I
have the Iomega drivers installed, the Radialogic disk won't mount. As a
result, I've pretty much been running with the larger external drive
accessible, and only switching setups to use the Zip when I am forced to do
so.
