I just got an email dated 01/01/04 and instead of being at the top of the list sorted by sent date, it was at the bottom. I checked the sort order to make sure I was seeing this but it was seeing the date as 1904, not 2004 and I just thought I’d let the Microsoft team know since I know they read this list. I checked the date in my date and time control panel as well to make sure it was nothing obvious on my end. If this is not a variant of the Y2K bug, let me know what preference I need to set. I would really appreciate that.  I can forward the email if anyone would like to see if this is affecting them as well.  I love Office 2001, and look forward to Office 10, but it would be nice if it saw 01/01/04 as 2004.

Howell,

You said you just  received this email. Why do you jump to the conclusion that this is a bug - or even anything to do with - Entourage? It's not - it's a problem on the sender's computer. Entourage just reads whatever the "Date" line in the received message's source tells it. Entourage doesn't think about whether it's possible or not. You could reset the date & Time control panel on your computer to March 17, 1923 and start sending out email, and all your recipients would get mail from "3/17/1923". it wouldn't be their fault - their email programs - Entourage, Eudora, Outlook, whatever - simply wouldn't think about it. It would be your doing.

Jan. 1, 1904 is the "date of birth" for Macintosh computers. (For Windows, it's Jan. 1, 1900). When someone's computer is registering this, it's a typical sign that their battery is very low, almost dead. Or sometimes they just need reset their PRAM.

So you can pass on that information to your correspondent. he or she needs to check their Date & Time control panel, reset their PRAM,  and probably get a new battery.
